Warsi comes under attack after tweets

Published on 19 November 2014

FORMER Tory Foreign Office Minister Baroness Warsi has sent a flurry of controversial tweets following the brutal murder of four worshippers in a Jerusalem synagogue.

The politician appeared to suggest the brutal murders had happened as a result of Israel's actions at the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, which was blocked to Palestinians in recent weeks following clashes.

Lady Warsi wrote on witter: "Israeli extremists storm Al Aqsa & intimidate worshippers. Palestinian extremists storm synagogue & kill 4 worshippers."

Zionist Federation chairman Paul Charney said: "Baroness Warsi's gross false equivalence between those who seek greater religious rights and those who seek simply to murder was not only inept and offensive. It also adds legitimacy to the real cause of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: religious extremism."

Jeremy Newmark, a former chief executive officer at the Jewish Leadership Council, said: "Shocked to see Baroness Warsi's warped tweet attempting to justify Jerusalem terror attacks..."

Vivian Wineman, president of the board of deputies of British Jews, wrote: "How can Baroness Warsi imply an equivalence between Jews entering a religious site to pray and Palestinians entering a synagogue to murder?"

Lady Warsi, a Muslim, resigned in August over the government's response to the then-crisis in Gaza and has since become an outspoken critic of the coalition's approach to the Middle East.

Tory Party chairman Grant Shapps said there was no justification for terrorism. "To be clear, Sayeeda Warsi speaks for herself," he added.
